Village Veterinary Practice Surgical Services
At Village Veterinary Practice we understand that the decision to move forward with a procedure that involves general anesthesia and your pet might be difficult. After all, no anesthetic procedure for human and animal alike comes without risk. However, whether it’s an elective procedure or a critical surgery, our number one goal is to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort.
Each patient is thoroughly evaluated prior to anesthesia and a customized anesthetic plan is developed to minimize your pet’s stress and risk during his or her procedure. Prior to any anesthetic event, your pet will be given a complete physical exam and pre-anesthetic blood testing will be performed. Additional tests may include urine tests, electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiogram, or radiographs to assess any special needs your pet may have.
During anesthesia your pet’s blood pressure, heart rate, heart rhythm, temperature, blood oxygen saturation and breathing pattern will be closely monitored and recorded. All patients will have an IV catheter placed and receive intravenous fluids throughout the procedure to maintain proper blood pressure and blood profusion. Once the procedure is complete, our attentive care continues into the recovery phase where we will closely monitor your pet’s vital signs, body temperature and pain level. Your pet’s pain management is a critical component to his or her successful recovery. Pain medication will be administered in the hospital and sent home to keep your pet comfortable. When your pet becomes alert during the recovery process, we will contact you with an update and schedule a release appointment. At the release appointment, a certified veterinary technician will discuss the post-operative care instructions so that you and your pet feel comfortable at home.
